From looking at the specs and the machines' interfaces, it appears the xbase 888 and 999 are the same except for the "X-filter." To quote Jomox: "because it has no X-Filter, the XBASE 888 is more affordable than the 999." I'm guessing its marketing, but the meme on the net keeps saying the 888 sounds 808ish.
